Since their electrifying debut with the Terra EP in 2015, Melbourne-based duo Opal Ocean, comprised of Alex Champ and Nadav Tabak, have taken the world by storm with their unique blend of instrumental music, combining high-octane Spanish guitar techniques and dynamic performances that make them sound like a full band.
Their breakout viral hit “J.A.M.” garnered a staggering 30 million views, launching them into the spotlight as one of the most exciting acts in modern instrumental music.
This was also the point, where we met OPAL OCEAN. The "soundwall" of this acoustic guitar duo beamed at us on the first listening, definitely in Hispanic realms. Whether it's really Spanish or Latin American, we have not been able to sort out through the thunderstorm of incredible fast percussive rhythms and virtuoso guitar melodies, as we notice all of a sudden that our heads are nodding as if we are listening to Motorhead's new album - eh? But yes, simply because what we hear, clearly rocks! And wait - are we still talking about just 2 acoustic guitars here? Yes, indeed with well-equipped pedalboards, but yes, this is an acoustic guitar duo; without samplemachines!
Many Tours in Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and many releases later, we still love the thrilling shows of OPAL OCEAN—combining raw energy, technical mastery, and rich sonic layers, they deliver shows that leave audiences in awe, often making it hard to believe it’s just two musicians on stage — and are happy to work on their next EU Tour for Summer 2025!
With intricate, psychedelic-tinged acoustic soundscapes, Opal Ocean released their debut album Lost Fables in 2016, captivating audiences worldwide as they toured Canada, New Zealand, and Europe. Their follow-up album, The Hadal Zone (2020), saw them collaborate with Dream Theater’s Jordan Rudess, further solidifying their reputation for pushing the boundaries of acoustic guitar music.
Opal Ocean's thrilling live performances have been a game-changer—combining raw energy, technical mastery, and rich sonic layers, they deliver shows that leave audiences in awe, often making it hard to believe it’s just two musicians on stage. Their unmatched chemistry has led them to headline major events like the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2021, while also earning endorsements from Godin Guitars of Canada.
In 2022, they released the Fish Food EP, reimagining tracks from legends like Joe Satriani, Pink Floyd, and System of a Down. They followed this up with a European tour, playing at hotspots like Spain, France, and Malta, headlining the Earth Garden Festival. The momentum only grew in 2023, when they dropped their live album and lit up stages across Australia and Europe, with a standout performance at Festival Bout du Monde in France.
2024 saw Opal Ocean conquer their first-ever European winter club tour in Germany to sold-out crowds, followed by a triumphant return to Canada’s Festival Guitare du Monde. Their summer tour across Europe included stops in France, Austria, Malta, and the Azores, continuing to showcase their fierce energy and groundbreaking fusion of genres. So there is a lot of Flamenco and Rumba, but also a lot of Progressive Rock and Acoustic Metal inside, and then it is very funky for long stretches and it remains all the way through true to the initial impression that it simply rocks - despite all the rhythmic complexity.
Whatever you wanna call it in the end, everyone should decide for themselves, Nuevo Rumba Flamenco or rather Acoustic Progressive Flamenco Rock?
In any case, the guitar duo with the New Zealander Nadav Tabak and the Frenchman Alex Champ have been inspiring a very wide crowd from the beginning.
After forming in late 2013, Frenchmen Alex Champ and New Zealander Nadav Tabak decided like many other great musicians to take to the streets busking, composing and crafting their original works in the heart of Melbourne, Australia. With their independent "Terra EP" enjoying great success, selling over 7000 physical copies.
In late 2016 the duo released their highly anticipated debut album "Lost Fables" recorded with producer Dave Newington and critically acclaimed mixing and mastering engineer Mark Lewis. Lost Fables, creates a vivid portrayal of Champ's and Tabak's diverse music style and unique relationship with the guitar.
The momentum from Lost Fable's release has brought attention to the duo online, going viral with millions of views and countless shares across social media in early 2017.
