AYOM
A musical project that transcends oceans and threads diverse identities.
Ayom is "the God of music", who lives inside the sound of the tambour and that, under different names, is common to many cultures of the world. His symbolic strength well represents the spirit of the musical project that connects Latin America, Africa and the Mediterranean. The project was born by the collaboration between Forró Miór and the singer-song writer and percussionist Jabu Morales.
Barcelona and Lisbon, cities of multicultural efervescvence, bring two projects that share passion for Afro-Latin and Brazilian popular music. Their voices sing the expressive mix of Brazil, their hands weave the melodic poetry of the Mediterranean, their feet dance the musical ancestry of Africa and their energy move to the rhythms of South America. The resulting sound crosses popular Brazilian rhythms (forró, samba, maracatu, carimbó, ijexá) and rhythms from the African diaspora (cumbia, calypso, merengue, guaguancó, semba, coladeira, funaná..), with melodic influence of the Mediterranean.
AYOM is Forró Miór's explosive energy together with the poetic force of Jabu Morales' voice, and it takes us on an surprising journey of sound through the fusion of harmonies, rhythms and melodies of multiple horizons.
BAND MEMBERS: Jabu Morales (BR): Voice and Percussions | Alberto Becucci (IT): acordeon | Pedro Bastos (BR): Guitars | Timoteo Grignani (IT/GR): Zabumba and Percussions | Walter Martins (ANG): Triangle and percussions
JABU MORALES is a very unique Brazilian singer-songwriter and percussionist.
Percussion, dancing and singing were constants Jabu's life, as an artist, a student and a teacher. In Brazil, Jabu joined some of the most recognized bands from Belo Horizonte, her hometown, such as Sarandeiros, Bantuquerê, Elephant Groove; in Barcelona she is the founder and director of iMaracatù Mandacarù and Tambor de Saia, and she currently leads the Amoeba and Madame Baiao projects. Her music, rooted in Brazilian popular rhythms, and influenced by other Afro-Latin rhythms, reveals surprising and extremely creative melodic and harmonical ways.
"(..)Jabu Morales a light in the firmament of this generation of brazilian artists. She writes beautifully and though many are taking up her songs, she is her own best interpreter. Listen." – Gerald Seligman (CEO, WOMEX 2009–2015)
FORRó MIór brings a new concept of Forró to the world music scene. Its proximity to this Brazilian folk genre remains faithful to the tradition but opens to the influences of cumbia, milonga, swing, samba and latin-jazz. Forró Miór brings a refreshing musical originality that leads to powerful and captivating performances.
"Among the most inspiring and renowed bands of this tradicional brazilian genre.” – Le Monde
